Tip
Employee looking at bulletin board

Are your employee bulletin boards drowning in a sea of bake sale flyers and take out menus? It’s time to clear the clutter and restore your bulletin boards as useful workplace communication tools.

Why are they worth saving? Bulletin boards are one of the most effective and cost-efficient ways to get employees’ attention and provide them with vital information.

But clearing useless content from your bulletin boards is only the first step. To ensure your content remains fresh and engaging for employees, you need to establish an action plan. Here are five tips to help you stay on track:

1. Develop a consistent architecture

You need a blueprint to organize the information on your bulletin boards. Key content areas could include:

  • Calendar of upcoming meetings and events (local or corporate wide)
  • Job safety policies
  • Employee recognition
  • Career development opportunities
  • Goals/strategies/performance results
2. Create interest and engagement through visuals

Employees need information that is quick and easy to digest and understand. Visuals, such as progress charts, diagrams, photographs and posters, support the need to “get it fast.”

3. Target high-traffic locations

While the size of your bulletin boards may vary depending on the available space, location is critical. Display bulletin boards in open areas where employees are more likely to stop and visit, such as in the cafeteria or near an elevator.

4. Keep content fresh

Even the best-placed bulletin boards will turn into “wallpaper” and get ignored if you don’t keep them alive with new information. To do this, ask content experts to submit information each week and keep track of key dates:

  • Document date: when the posted item was developed
  • Posting date: when the document was posted
  • Removal date: when the posting should be removed
5. Enlist help to maintain bulletin boards

You can’t be at every employee location or campus. So, assign someone at each location to update or replace outdated content and collect employee feedback.
