Q&A with Laura Umbach

What is the most satisfying or memorable project you’ve worked on?
It’s hard to pick just one. I love when I work on a project from concept to final execution. I like to be part of the brainstorming process and take it all the way to its finalized reveal to the world. It’s extremely satisfying to look at something I created and know I helped mold it into what it is in the end. Especially something that needs to be physically fabricated. And of course, positive feedback is very satisfying as well!

Who (or what) inspires you in your work?
I get inspiration from all over. It can be viewing other artists’ work, reading about new and exciting happenings in the design world, or even things in the real world can spark inspiration.

What was your first job?
Lifeguard by day, babysitter by night.

What's your passion?
To create—whether it’s designing something digitally on my computer, crafting with my hands, or upcycling a really cool, old, vintage piece of furniture.

Instagram.

If you were to choose another profession, what would it be?
I almost went into forensic science. I love to solve.

What do you like to do while you’re sketching a new concept?
I like to put my music on, get comfortable, and be uninterrupted so I can really sink into my inspiration.

Where's the most memorable place you've traveled to?
Germany. My father’s family is German, and I didn’t grow up around them. I loved traveling to Germany with them and learning a lot about my heritage and ancestors. It’s an amazing, beautiful country!

What’s your most unique hobby?
I like to make wood pallet board art.

What’s your favorite color?
Purple.

What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Chocolate and coffee.

What is your spirit animal? Why?
A cat because I am curious, adventurous and love being in the warm sun.

If you could live inside a television show, which would it be?
Friends!

The internet goes down. What do you do now?
Clean and organize.

What are three things you can’t live without?
