Approach Your Work From an Employee Perspective

Are you in an employee state of mind? While many communicators say they know what employees want to hear, it’s easy to get sidetracked trying to satisfy senior management’s agenda. Instead, your top priority should be communicating in ways that meet employees’ needs. The logical first step is to gather and analyze employee demographics.

Do you know your audience?
One of the oldest principles in the communication profession is to “know your audience.” Now more than ever, this concept is critical to your success as a communicator.

How well do you know the employees in your company? Take the following assessment to find out:

Leverage demographics to become more employee focused
As organizations become larger and more complex, it’s increasingly difficult to take a one-size-fits-all approach to communication. As a result, you need to treat employees as consumers of your communication and determine how to reach and engage each segment of your workforce. The more you know about your audience, the better you’ll meet their needs.

The next step, after gathering and analyzing your employee demographics, is conducting qualitative research to gain a deeper understanding of employees’ communication preferences. Together, these findings will help you build a communication strategy that resonates with employees.
