Engaging employees in benefits

Challenge:
Wyeth (now part of Pfizer) was a leading pharmaceutical and health care company with 50,000 employees in 145 countries. When faced with rising employee benefits costs, the company conducted an internal benchmarking survey to assess employees' attitudes and preferences about benefits. Survey results helped determine which less-desirable benefits could be cut from the program, and which more-preferred benefits could be added. The survey also indicated that employees did not realize the overall value of the benefits offered by Wyeth. Not only did Wyeth need to inform and educate employees about benefit changes, they needed to present the benefits program as a total package, on par with (or, in some cases, better than) the programs offered by similar companies.

Solution:
Davis & Company collaborated with Wyeth's HR organization to create and implement an easy to use, engaging, customized benefits campaign. Together, we developed, designed and produced the following:

  • A strong graphic identity for the program
  • An Open Enrollment package (including an Employee Benefits Resource Book, Benefits Changes Overview and personalized enrollment forms)
  • Communications toolkit for HR representatives
  • Posters
  • Web site

Results:
The campaign was extremely successful—87% of employees indicated a high understanding of their benefits package and Open Enrollment, and 77% found campaign materials to be useful.

Wyeth and Davis & Company received the NJ/IABC and NY/IABC Awards of Excellence, the APEX Award of Excellence and a special recognition from the Publications Management Magnum Opus Awards for this project.
