Alison Davis, CEO of Davis & Company, has written an article—5 Ways to Help CEOs Make Town Halls More Interactive—for the August issue of CW Bulletin, the e-newsletter for members of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC).
The article, which is part of a special issue on coaching leaders to be better communicators, deals with the challenge of encouraging employees to ask questions and otherwise participate in town hall meetings.
"Ask senior leaders what they'd most like to improve about town hall meetings, and most will tell you they'd like more employee participation," writes Alison. "CEOs and other leaders know that town halls are most meaningful when they're interactive. That's why they're disappointed when employees sit there silently and ask few questions during the Q&A session."
How can you design more interactive face-to-face and virtual town halls? Alison's article suggests five ways to do so, including adjusting the timing of the agenda, limiting the number of topics and changing the dynamics of the Q&A session.
