Q&A with Melissa Logan

What is the most satisfying or memorable project you’ve worked on?
I really love the end-of-year card I designed a couple of years ago with the space theme. It was designed comic book style, with panels and puzzle pages. Everything about it was fun for me.

Who (or what) inspires you in your work?
Right now, it’s science fiction book covers.

What was your first job?
I worked as a costumed character for children’s book signings at a local independent bookstore.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years in your career?
Since our goal is to be the best communication firm in the galaxy, I have to go with being a benign earthling overlord, don’t I?

If you were to choose another profession, what would it be?
I would be a librarian or a bookseller.

What genre of music helps you do your best work?
As my coworkers can attest, I listen to a lot of riot grrl and punk music—loudly.

Where's the most memorable place you've traveled to?
I spent a week on Anna Maria Island in Florida for a martial arts training retreat in 2002. It’s memorable because I met my husband on that trip!

What do you like to do on the weekends?
My weekends kind of revolve around books. When I am not reading, I am on Twitter talking about reading or looking for more to read.

What is your spirit animal? Why?
The honeybadger and you can probably guess why.

What’s your favorite word? Why?
Sesquipedalian—“a long word for long words” according to Merriam-Webster. Because there’s nothing wrong with a little “sesquipedalian excess” now and then (no matter what Kathy says).

If you could live inside a television show, which would it be?
Star Trek. (I would have chosen Doctor Who except bad things are always happening to the Earth in that show.)

What are three things you can’t live without?
Food, water and air. Too literal? Then I would have to say books, my family and a really good blanket. Possibly in that order.
